Afghan Refugee Resettlement

As you are aware, thousands of Afghan refugees have arrived in the US with more on the way. Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest will no doubt be involved in their re-settlement in our area. We may be able to sponsor a family or individual, or, at least, provide needed items for families.

If you are interested in helping with such a project or willing to research what is needed for sponsorship and/or donations, please contact the church office (480-967-3543 or info@ulctempe.org). We have a history of such sponsorship both by the congregation and by students. Thank you!

Opening of the Academic Year

We got off to a great start last Sunday with the Opening of the Academic Year, return of students, and return of more church members. Students enjoyed their first meal as well.

This week while remaining masked, we will introduce a bit of singing into worship. As we did last week, Holy Communion will be distributed with pre-cut pieces of bread handed out by tongs and individual glasses of wine/grape juice. Glasses are socially distanced in the trays and all distributing communion are masked. We do have sign ups now for lectors, ushers, and communion assistants or you can call the church office (480-967-3543) to sign up.

We continue to work toward live-streaming worship and think this may happen mid September. Thank you for your patience as we continue to work to be safe and provide a good worship experience.

LCM Student Headed to Youth Gathering

August 25, 2021

Lutheran Campus Minsitry (LCM) second-year student Eliana Valenzuela has been accepted as a member of the Gathering Volunteer Corp for the ELCA Senior High Youth Gathering in Minneapolis next July. Eliana will serve in a chaperone/mentor/guide capacity.

Congratulations, Eliana!

High School youth may still apply for the gathering. Information can be found at www.elca.org. University Lutheran Church has some funding to help with costs.

A Cool Crew

August 25, 2021

A team of volunteers installed a new air conditioning unit in the Campus Center’s student apartment. A big thanks to Jerry Park, Arno Leskinen, Scot Boyden, Keith Cornell, Nils Peterson, Doug LaMont, both Paul Westermann’s and the support of Paul’s mom, Lisa Westermann, who were visiting from California, and of course Dylan Weeks and Dylan’s mother, Carol Weeks.
This was not an easy project, but the team came through.

Pastor Gary and MaryBeth LaMont were going to help dispose of the old unit through the City of Tempe’s hazardous recycling project, but mysteriously the old unit disappeared. Jerry Park continued caulking and sealing of the unit to insure a water tight seal during the monsoon.

The ULC Community is one terrific group of folks.

Help For Haiti

On Saturday, August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti. More than 6,900 people were injured and at least 26,000 homes were damaged or destroyed. Lutheran Disaster Response of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is asking for donations to assist all who were affected by this earthquake. Your donation will be used in full–100%–to assist all who were affected.
