Student of the Month – Stephen Gerrish

March 26, 2015

Freshman, Electrical Engineering Major

Why did you choose to go to ASU?  Its close to home, and I have close friends going to ASU.

Why did you choose your major?  Engineering runs in the family and it seemed like a useful major.  I like math and this major is a good use of my math skills.

What are your plans after Graduation?  I don’t know, probably work in some engineering company.

Why did you start coming to LCM?  My sister (Julie) made me come haha.  And then I made good friends.  And it’s the best.

What is your favorite thing about LCM?  The    people, and free food on Wednesdays and Sundays.

What role has LCM played in your college life?  It has kept me involved in the church and keeps me busy on the weekends with activities and trips/retreats.

What is an interesting fact(s) about yourself?  I am a member of the Arizona Wind Symphony and the  pretty rocking LCM jazz band.  I once built a table, and I spent my spring break refinishing chairs.

What are some hobbies/things you like to do?  I like to play music and watch a lot of movies.  Wood working.

If you had a magic carpet that could take you to any location at any time in history, where/when would you go, what would you do, and why?  I would go to Machu Pichu during its heyday, walk around, see it during its glory days.  It seems like such a cool place to be, hanging out high up in the mountains.

Student of the Month – Rebecca Sherod

Rebecca Sherod

Rebecca Sherod

Freshman, Early Childhood and Early Childhood Special Education Major

Why did you choose that major?  I really love kids, and I like working with kids.  I like the idea of giving kids a good start in their education.

Why did you choose to go to ASU?  It wasn’t really a choice.  I had a family tradition to carry on (Rebecca is the fourth Sherod to attend ASU; her older sister, Colleen, currently attends with her!), and ASU was where I wanted to go.  ASU has a really good education college.

What are your plans for after graduation?  To leave the state (haha).  I want to go to a state that has seasons.

Maybe go to Grad School, maybe teach?  I don’t know (haha).

Why did you come to LCM?  This was the school Maggie (one of her older sisters) went to, and Colleen currently goes here.  It was assumed that I would come to LCM, but I also wanted to come.  I had visited Maggie and Colleen and met people here who were nice.  It seemed like a good church home.

What is your favorite thing about LCM?  I like that the Sunday services are a good mixture of Catholic and contemporary.  I really like the people—how welcoming and including everyone is.  I like the atmosphere—everyone seems to have a good time.  LCM makes me want to come to church; it makes me look forward to church.

What role has LCM played in your college life?  It has introduced me to new people, and it has helped me to maintain my faith while at school.

What are some of your hobbies/interests?  I am on the ASU Crew Team (rowing)!  I like to read, and I run a lot.

What is an interesting fact about yourself?  I am legally a giant!  For a woman at my age and over 6 feet tall, I am categorized as a giant.

If you had a magic carpet that took you anywhere at any time, where/when would you go and why?  I would go back in time and meet Zelda Fitzgerald.  I read a biography about her and fell in love with her and her story.

Nick Cota – Student of the Month

 Nick Cota

Freshman, Civil Engineering Major

Why did you choose to major in Civil Engineering?  I’m really good at math and science.  Civil Engineering seems to be the only engineering major useful for helping people.

Why did you come to ASU?  I wanted to major in Engineering and I wanted to stay in state, but I didn’t want to go to Tucson.

Why did you come to LCM?  An LCM group came to Desert Cross Lutheran Church’s youth group last spring and talked about LCM.  They seemed like a cool group and I kept in contact with them over the summer.  I had always gone to church and youth group growing up, so I felt like something was missing if I didn’t go to church while I was in college.

What is your favorite thing about LCM?  All of the activities, because it keeps me busy.

What role has LCM played in your college life so far?  It keeps me busy outside of class, which helps me to do better in school because I am managing my time and prioritizing.

What are some of your hobbies/things you like to do?  I like to read and play video games.  I watch and collect movies.

If you had a magic carpet that could take you anywhere at any time, where/when would you go?  I would go to any major American city in the early 20th century, from the 1900s to the 1930s, and go on a bootlegging adventure.  There would be so much more to do at that time, life would be so different.
