One of Our Students…

March 13, 2026

The current image has no alternative text. The file name is: Chris-Sandoval-2026-Square.jpg

“I came from a faith where my path was set, my course was outlined, and my final destination was Mormon Exaltation.” Chris never imagined that his spiritual journey would lead him to set foot in University Lutheran Church in Tempe, Arizona. “Growing up as both Mormon and indigenous, I was taught to look forward to my Missionary work and getting married in the Mormon temple.” Chris recalls that while reading the required text, the Book of Mormon, “I saw myself back then as a Mormon character like Captain Moroni or Nephi.” However, when outside of the church and being apart from the church’s traditions, Chris was able to look deeper into Mormonism saying that “I couldn’t have imagined ever embracing another church at the time.”

Chris recalls that a YouTube video on the Mormon church caused him to ask more questions, most of which would remain unanswered by the church. This led to Chris asking even more questions and trying to widen his understanding of faith by going to different denominations and churches. Now as a newly baptized ELCA Lutheran, Chris says, “I see the world differently than the black and white world that the Mormons taught me.” Chris credits Lutheran Campus Ministry with being a place where he felt supported and comfortable enough to grow in his faith by asking difficult questions and growing in Christ. “LCM made a comfortable environment for me where I could learn the Gospel and challenge my own previous faith.” Chris has become a member at University Lutheran Church and says that “I can now make a new spiritual beginning around places I knew as Mormon. Now I have the opportunity to see these spaces as a Lutheran.”

Thank you for investing in the lives of young people like Chris and providing them space to become closer to God and to fellowship with other Young Adults and students. Your support through the Campus Ministry Madness fundraising campaign and in countless other ways means that every week students can gather with one another, share a meal, and focus on God’s work in their lives.

Student Meals

January 8, 2026

Providing meals to college students is an important, integral part of our ministry. During the ASU Fall and Spring Semesters,
we provide Sunday lunch and Wednesday dinner to students as well as stocking a food pantry in our Campus Center. We proudly do this because:

  • More than one-third of ASU college students go hungry each month.

  • Sharing meals allows college students to get to know each other and builds community.
  • You will enjoy meeting our insightful, clever, and warmhearted students!
  • Students enjoy interacting and conversing with the people who provide the meals.

Sign-up sheets to provide the meals are posted on the moving bulletin board, or you can contact the church office: info@ulctempe.org or 480-967-3543. If you aren’t available to cook this spring semester, monetary donations are also welcome and appreciated. Thank you in advance for your kind support!

If you are considering cooking a student meal for the first time or just want more info about the process, feel free to contact Katherine Stevens (katherinemstevens@yahoo.com) or Greg Febock (lcmassociate@gmail.com). For specific instructions and tips on how to best prepare a student meal, you can also visit the “Student Meals Ministry” link under the “Connect” tab on this website.

Support Pitchfork Pantry – 3 Ways You Can Help

October 1, 2025

The current image has no alternative text. The file name is: Pitchfork-Pantry-Logo-10.01.2025.jpg

Pitchfork Pantry, ASU’s student-run food bank, is one of our most fruitful long-term partners. Last semester, the Pantry routinely saw several hundred students at each distribution. There were some weeks where the Pantry did not have enough food to serve all the students and had to close early. Due to this great need for hunger relief among students, we are letting you know of three different ways you can help support the Pantry:

  • We are continuing to collect shelf-stable, non-perishable foods, canned goods, condiments, individually packaged meals, along with hygiene products, soap, and other dry goods. Please bring donations to the collection box on the altar. Last year, there was a particular need for vegetarian options!
  • The Pantry recently launched an Amazon wish list. This method of donating is particularly helpful because it identifies their most essential items and ships directly to the Pantry! Access their Amazon registry link here.
  • The Pantry is able to take financial contributions again! They are partnering with the Wesley Student Foundation at ASU, hosted by First United Methodist Church. If you would like to contribute, please make checks payable to the Wesley Student Foundation at ASU, with Pitchfork Pantry on the memo line.

For more information, including how to volunteer, visit www.pitchforkpantry.org

Thank you very much for your charity!
